50 volunteers will take part in the Big Sleep Leeds at Emerald Headingley this Thursday to raise money for vulnerable people in the city.
Money raised from the event will be split between local charities: Leeds Rhinos Foundation, St Gemma's Hospice and St George's Crypt, who all support provide support for the city's most vulnerable people.

The Leeds Rhinos squad, including Leeds Rhinos director of rugby Kevin Sinfield MBE, will join volunteers representing all three charities who will be sleeping under the Carnegie Terrace.

Here are some of the volunteers and why they wanted to take part:

Hannah Thaxter
Editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post, Hannah Thaxter was one of the first to pledge her support for the Big Sleep 2018. Leeds Rhinos Foundation contributes a weekly page every Tuesday to her paper, updating readers about events and programmes that the charity runs throughout the year.

When asked about why she wanted to take part, Thaxter said: "As editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post we do so many stories about the work of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, St George's Crypt and St Gemma's Hospice - more importantly we hear the stories of the people who really need them. It's easy to say something more should be done - it's harder to do it."

Sue Ward
Sue Ward is head of operations at Leeds Rhinos and is looking to support vulnerable people in Leeds. She will be sleeping in the redeveloped stadium which she has overseen over the last 2 years. Now in her twelfth year at the Rhinos, she is taking on a new challenge with the Big Sleep Leeds.
"I'm really looking forward to taking part in the Big Sleep this year," said Ward. "I know the venue very well, having worked here for twelve years, but sleeping out in the terraces will be a new experience for me. I can usually sleep anywhere but we'll soon see if that's true!"

Helen Young
Headingley Lodge manager Helen Young will be swapping her rooms for the steps of the Carnegie Stand on Thursday night. Despite her experience with the scouts, the Big Sleep offers her the chance to raise money for three of Leeds' biggests charities.
"As the manager of Headingley Lodge, I have a choice of rooms to sleep in; but not on the 29th November! There are many people living on the streets for whatever reasons they may have, this is our opportunity to raise awareness and show support through these three charities."

Phil Caplan
After taking part in last year's sleepout, Phil Caplan will be hoping for the same success this year. The chairman of Leeds Rhinos Foundation's and rugby league reporter has plenty of memories at Emerald Headingley Stadium, and the Big Sleep 2018 will be one of them.
"The group taking part is making a very small sacrifice to highlight issues we are passionately concerned about. The three organisations who stand to benefit from the fundraising do a fantastic job in the community with some of the most deprived, disadvantaged and dispossessed. Helping and highlighting their plight is the least we can do, and any support will be massively appreciated."

Leeds Rhinos Squad
The Big Sleep got a big boost when the Leeds Rhinos squad announced they would be joining volunteers on the Carnegie Terrace. The squad will swap the familiar Headingley turf for the Carnegie Stand, with players excited to have the opportunity to take part.
Prop Anthony Mullally said: "We are all proud to support this event and do our part to help raise money and awareness for these charities. Some of the lads are a bit nervous because it is out of their comfort zone, but they are excited to do it. It will be good with everyone together, although I will be avoiding sleeping next to Brad Singleton because he is the loudest snorer"

Dan Busfield
Dan Busfield is Leeds Rhinos Foundation's head of partnerships and development and will be taking part for the second year.
"I was shocked reading that six people have lost their lives on the streets of Leeds in the past 18 months so giving up a night's comfort to raise awareness and support for the homelessness is not much to ask at all" said Busfield. "In doing so we can also raise valuable funds for three great charities who contribute to the city of Leeds as a whole, covering a wide range of agendas."

Sian Jones
Sian Jones will be making the move from the Rugby Offices to the Carnegie Terrace on Thursday night. Leeds Rugby's head of customer experience will be doing the event for the first time and is looking forward to joining other volunteers.
"I never know how best to support the homeless and vulnerable people in and around Leeds as giving money directly to one doesn't attempt to help everyone. I could just donate money directly, but I felt this way I would be putting myself in the position and hoping that by doing so it would raise awareness and encourage people to donate more money to try and help tackle this ever-increasing issue."

Sam Horner
A familiar face in the community game, through his role as Leeds Rhinos Foundation's community club development officer, Sam Horner will be braving the weather, like many others.
"Growing up in a deprived area of Leeds and seeing first-hand the hardships of many families around me I feel very lucky to be in a position to have a good support mechanism in my life, many people haven't. That's why I fully support the big Sleep."
